Information About Becoming a Notary

*WARREN COUNTY IS NOW AN AUTHORIZED EDUCATION AND TESTING PROVIDER

The new legislation, effective Sept. 20, 2019, standardizes the requirements to become a notary in Ohio, and centralizes the administration of the process to the Ohio Secretary of State. To review the changes, visit http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/147

EDUCATION/TESTING

New applicants for notary commissions will be required to obtain a criminal records check (either Ohio BCI or Federal) current within six months of application. If the report shows no disqualifying offenses, then the applicant may proceed to an authorized education and testing provider for a three-hour class and pass a test. (If the applicant is an attorney licensed in Ohio, then the criminal records check and a test are not required.)

Following the successful completion of the education program, the applicant will file an application electronically with the Ohio Secretary of State.

Beginning in October 2019, the notary class will typically be held on the third Wednesday of each month at Warren County Common Pleas Court, 500 Justice Drive, Lebanon. The test is administered immediately following the class. The time schedule is 12:30-4:30 p.m. those days. The fees, payable by check or money order at the time of the class, are:

  • Non-attorney fee: $130 payable to the Warren County Treasurer
  • Attorney fee: $75 payable to the Warren County Treasurer
